Ignition Timing for O Series
Can anyone tell me what the ignition timing should be for a 2.0 ‘O’. series engine (ex Princess, SD1 etc)? I’m not sure if it’s the same as a 1700 O series but maybe someone here could confirm?
Thanks

Re: Ignition Timing for O Series
Ital 2.0 - dynamic timing - 18 degrees @1500rpm
SD1 2.0 (early) - dynamic timing - 25 degrees @2500rpm
Ambassador 2.0 single carb - dynamic timing - 15 degrees @1500rpm
Ambassador 2.0 twin carb - dynamic timing - 18 degrees @2000rpm
Take your pick. All figures from factory manuals.
SD1 2.0 (early) - dynamic timing - 25 degrees @2500rpm
Ambassador 2.0 single carb - dynamic timing - 15 degrees @1500rpm
Ambassador 2.0 twin carb - dynamic timing - 18 degrees @2000rpm
Take your pick. All figures from factory manuals.

Thanks. Hmm… a bit of choice then!
My engine is from an SD1 but is now running a single HIF44 jetted for a 2.0 (as per Princess).
Looks like 15-18 BTDC is probably where it’s at then?

Re: Ignition Timing for O Series
What I would do in the absense or a rolling road is set it to 25deg BTDC at 2500 without vacuum then road test the car puling away 30-50 mph at full throttle knocking the timing back in 2 deg incruments untill the engine stops pinking. This will give you ignition timing just about optimum for your set up then reconnect your vaccum advance set idle speed and mixture repeat and ensure car still does not pink. Modern unleaded fuel will burn different to the origonnal 4 star used when new. When converting cars to run on unleaded only in early 2000's most cars were retarded by about 4 deg BTDC from origonal setting.

Re: Ignition Timing for O Series
Good advice from David.
David - I agree with the additional retardation for unleaded, but I have noticed that I have been able to advance the timing by about 2-3 degrees since the introduction of E5-E10, so closer to old leaded fuel settings.

Re: Ignition Timing for O Series
I found a pump near to home which serves fuel with no Ethanol, so happy using that. But can't get a big enough tank fitted for very long journeys so will have to resort to the crap stuff then.

Do you get a ferry voucher to help if you want to get to main land or is it a sensible fee to start with?

Don’t call England the ‘mainland’. The islanders will lynch you!JubileeNut wrote:Do you get a ferry voucher to help if you want to get to main land or is it a sensible fee to start with?
Isle of Man is a country in its own right. It is the mainland and they definitely defend that fiercely!
Ferry isn’t cheap. Depends when but expect to pay £400 plus for a return on a not so friendly time crossing.

Makes the IOW cheap then! What you need is a bridge.
So your defecting then! No one will be able to afford to visit, well there's an idea
