Re: 1300 A Series Engine
Last weekend got the Head back from Coltech at Hollesley. Sometime in the past the engine has been cooked so they have skimmed the face, recut the seats and ordered in new Exhaust valves. Discussed with them the need to fit hardened inserts and, unless I am intending pushing engine hard or driving h...

Re: Help please, indictors wont work
I had a problem with my Indicators. Did all the checks, Checked the fuse visually no probs, the flasher units worked, checked the column stalk switches and the wiring - still no dice. Decided to check the fuse again - this time with a multimeter. Yep, you guessed it, broken fuse at the end not visib...

Re: Help please, indictors wont work
Did the indicators work prior to fitting the Stereo? If yes, my suggestion is go back to that point and forget about fitting the stereo that way. Me: I am no auto electrician and like to keep things "simple". When I have fitted auxiliaries in the past I run a new Positive line off the Batt...

Re: 1300 A Series Engine
Thanks Josh for the info. I am guessing that the block is original but won't know until I check numbers. Main worry is that the Piston(s) is wrongly fitted on the Con Rod so will need to extract the Gudgeon Pin. How easy and are the Extraction Tools easily available? Best scenario is that the whole ...

Re: 1300 A Series Engine
Last week decided to get the problem of my oil and water loss sorted. A local mechanic did a pressure test and identified low compression in bores, due to leakage at Exhaust Valves. Rings slightly down but not unduly. Head has been removed and as suspected Head Gasket has broken down and Exhaust Val...

Re: 77 Marina keeps blowing rear lights
The main problem with the rear lights on Mk1s & Mk2s is usually the earthing, as the units earth through their mounting bolts. If there’s much rust the connection will be iffy and lead to spikes in the supply. Try running an earth lead from the car body to the metal rear light unit. Are those t...

Re: starter motor
As suggested a google search, or yellow pages, should find you a few local Auto Electrical Companies that refurbish Starter Motors, Alternator, Dynamos etc. Alternatively ask a few of your local Auto Factor Shops! I found both my Alternator and Starter Motor were rather tired a couple of years back,...

Re: Cooling...
Took Kermit out for a short run last week and on return pretty close to overheating, just showing red! Checked the water and was very very low. So....now have two problems. Using Oil and Water. Suspected worn valves and piston rings (as compression is down) but am now wondering if Head Gasket is sho...

Re: Cooling...
Noticed couple of weeks ago Temperature rising a tad above normal on Kermit - nothing serious but today decided to investigate. Slight leak around Thermostat cover has meant water level has dropped so decided to cut a new gasket. On removing the cover noticed to branch for the hose badly corroded an...

Re: BATTERY
Stop Start systems use Absorbed Glass Matt (AGM) Batteries rather than Flooded Lead Acid Batteries. The AGM battery is supposed to be more stable for the constant use of starter motor. The cars electronic system has a battery shunt built into the Negative battery lead in most cases this shunt is al...

Re: BATTERY
It looks like time to replace the battery on my 1300 saloon and reading through the comments posted, no one seems to have mentioned the suitability of different types. Obviously Lead Acid are old school but most sites seem to be selling Calcium batteries - which appear to be designed for stop/start ...

Re: 1300 A Series Engine
It's also worth saying not all lead substitute uses an octane booster. For example, I am sure Castrol do two versions of 'Valvemaster', one with and one without. As David says, timing needs to be adjusted according to the fuel you use and because modern fuels are different invariably the factory ti...

Re: 1300 A Series Engine
Advice on some other fora/forums is that lead substitute also improves running by reducing pinking, (Raising the octane levels?) and thereby reduces engine wear. Are they talking ballcocks
