Prop Shaft Troubles

The prop shaft on PTH is clonking quite badly when accelerating/decelerating and the rumble is getting worse at higher speeds. Can anyone recommend somewhere that can sort it out, or can it be done at home?

Should be able to fix it as usually circlip type these can be done with a socket and a vice. Centre bearing same as a Dolomite several were on ebay when I changed mine.

However, there are two types of UJ fittings, one you can do yourself with circlips like those shown in the picture, or standard internal circlips with the little holes in the end.

The rear and centre UJs are the same, the front one is different as it has a grease nipple. I’ll post the UJ part numbers later.

The second type is called ‘staked’, this is where the UJ cups holding the needle bearings are held in the propshaft yoke by peening the edge of the yoke to hold them in. They are impossible to do at home and will need professional refurbishment. There will be a local drive shaft maker/repairer in your area - someone like Bailey Morris. You’ll need to check what you have before ordering the UJs.

ok, cheers guys. Yes, PTH has the snap clips over the cup. I have seen new UJ's on line but thought I'd check here first before ordering anything. Part number would be great Chris, cheers.

I can't find anything when typing in those part numbers or the one with a grease nipple, but plenty of the sealed for life ones around. Same as Hillman Hunter and Avenger.

I have had a quick look around GUJ115 is listed for Dolomite MGB MG Midget & Triumph Spitfire/ Herald, so may well have changed part number. The link below are UJ manufactures the site allows you to search by Size

Very likely. The measurements are 2.382 for the cup and 6.130 joint diameter, Dolomite is same. Same as Morris 8, 10, and 12 apparently.

If you are going to do the work yourself, fine.
However, if you are using a propshaft refurb company make sure they are OK using the UJs that you buy, the place I used insisted on using UJs from their own stock as they didn't trust the UJ I supplied ( even though it was a brand new GKN one).

ok, thanks for the heads up. I'll do it myself, unless of course the prop is damaged, though I don't think it is.

I can understand the machine company not fitting customer supplied parts. Legislation is to blame and the lets sue culture. I don't fit customer supplied parts for two reasons firstly is the ramp down time if it is the incorrect part with poor quality and take much longer to fit. Secondly the Garage once it is fitted as deemed it to be suitable and of satisfactory quality and then become responsible for the warranty not only for the fitting but the part as well. Crazy I know but that's how it is.
