No it won’t turn without the backplate off.
Nuts, thought so. Means removing my freshly bled brake calipers again.

No worries on the calipers. Get some stiff wire and hang the caliper off the top lever arm with the wire. No need to disassemble everything.

Although the ‘strip the trunnion off’ method will ensure complete lubrication, I have found that jacking the car up to get the weight off the trunnion does help the grease to get more equally through the threads.

Also - check the steering rack has adequate gear oil in it. On the top surface in the middle of the rack there will be either a little plastic collar or some tape. Move it to one side and you will find a hole, which if you are careful you can slowly fill with oil. The manual says 200ml. I have used a small syringe, getting someone to turn the wheel backwards and forwards at the same time helps. It will keep the steering smoother and extend the life of the steering rack bush.

Depends if he’s got the metal pipe from leg to caliper.

Yeah, nah I'm stuffed on that one. Flex and hard-line join through the upright.

I've heard of someone making an "adaptor" that bolts to the upright and holds the pipe join instead, so you can unbolt the bracket from the upright without undoing the pipe join. Might have to research that as its bit of a pain.

Those SU pumps can have new diaphragms fitted if you can get a kit.

Hi Paul, thanks. Yes I do intend to rebuild the pump and keep it as a spare.

You're the first person to actually test one so I hope it works OK!

They seem to be getting harder to find (we only have a limited stock of the old stock ones) so definitely worth keeping the rebuildable types- hopefully ethanol proof diaphragms will start being more available for these.

Don't worry Matt, it fired up straight away with the new pump, seemed to be working fine. I'll take the car for a drive in a day or so and give it a proper test.

All this talk about exhausts, well it had to happen!
Neighbour required a urgent collection of some furniture and as Kermit has a towbar hitched up and headed to Witham.
On the way back hit a bad pothole and the jolt caused the downpipe to drop onto the road.
Will never complain about torsion bar suspension again. Downpipe strung up to torsion bar and back on the road, albeit rather noisily.
Exhaust off and this weekend will hopefully effect a repair.

I remember about 16 years ago when I was using my MK2 1.3 coupe, we'd taken my daughter to a children's party at one of those big play centres when the rear silencer parted company with the rest of the exhaust and scraped noisily along the tarmac in front of all the other startled parents and children! 😆
Poor Kermit, hope you manage to fix it.

Hopefully. "Thick fit" opined that the downpipe flange was torn off, but on removal there is a flange. It looks as if a system has been cobbled together and that the downpipe might not be "genuine" marina.
As the boss has forbidden excess expenditure I am going to fabricate a new flange piece and weld to the pipe. Until extra funds become available to buy a full system, that will have to suffice!

If it helps I've got a complete 1.3 stainless exhaust. It's been on a car but is in good condition.
