He is indeed, very nice chap. Had a good day, he really enjoyed driving them, even though the brake drum on PTH started grabbing mid test! He really liked the white one but run out of memory on his camera to film anymore on TDT. Yes, very good video.

I watched the video yesterday. I thought Ian was a bit down on PTH at first, highlighting the negative aspects of the car, especially the "Morris Minor suspension from 1948". "Morris Minor engine" and "only four gears". I don't recall him saying anything like this when he road tested a Harvest Gold 1100cc Allegro a few months ago, basicially loving it from the outset, although I do seem to remember back windows popping out and being more aerodynamic in reverse were mentioned. I'm glad to see he warmed considerably to TDT. I've got some disillusionment with the model myself at the moment, but, you know, when someone makes negative sounding comments about a 1970s car 'only having four gears' it is completely ignoring the fact that Vauxhall Vivas, Hillman Avengers and Ford Cortinas up to 1982 all still only had four gears.

I was a HubNut subscriber at one time and he got me into watching car videos on YouTube via a Firestick, in preference to watching a lot of the other rubbish coming over terrestrial TV, but I dropped out a month or two back when he drove a cabriolet version of the Mk6 Escort and he was having a really bad day, started the video by saying he'd forgotten he'd said he was going to do a test on this car, which was parked on an industrial estate, got irritated by people going about their business on the estate interrupting his video, got annoyed by the traffic on the roads in a built up area, and the poor weather. Then proceeded to take the top down on the Escort in the rain, and complained when he started getting wet when he got stuck in a traffic jam! I don't know who lent him this car, but I was sort of looking forwards to this video because I've been driving a tin top Mk6 Escort every day for the past ten months, and I don't think it's the greatest car, but it's got me about. But he pretty much laid into the one he was driving, and I think he upset more than just me by his negative comments. Saying he wasn't impressed by the instrument needles resembling cocktail sticks...really? I'd never noticed. They go round the dials and point to the numbers, it's all I was bothered about. Ian also seems to love some REALLY bad cars, gets really enthusiastic about something then sells it a month later. So as a channel to watch, I began getting a bit uncomfortable with how I felt he was treating some of the cars belonging to other people (but of course that is their business) and the fact that I knew after a while that something he bought cheap one month and was full of enthusiasm for would turn out to be full of problems and sold a month later. Maybe it was a bit too close to home for me, in my youth at least. Anyway I still drop in from time to time to see if Ian's done an interesting road test, like PTH and TDT, but the exploits of a derelict Reliant Fox painted with a roller and vinyl emulsion paint doesn't do it for me any more. :problem:

PTH is very worn out, flat rear springs, very settled torsion bars and the engine sounds and feels like it'll need a rebuild in the not too distant future, the oil light is staying on a little longer on start up every week, so I can understand him not giving a glowing review on that one, the binding brake drum didn't help either but I think he did the car proud considering. I think it's each to their own, I had a 1998 Escort turbo diesel and I thought it was an amazing car. It was only five years old at the time yet had severe rot on the back chassis legs which forced me to scrap it and left me feeling a bit cross with Ford for a while over that, but other than that it was a good car. I can't comment on the cabriolet, though I did have a 1986 Vauxhall Cavalier cabriolet which was awful. It whistled at anything over thirty, dripped rain water on my wrist when holding the steering wheel, the pedals felt like they were in the wrong place and the ride was like a go-kart. I've driven a four door Cavalier saloon and that felt fine compared, a different car almost. Not liking a particular model of car doesn't mean to condemn all the different versions.

HubNut's not a bad lad. I understand why he's not to everyone's taste, but I can't help liking his videos, even the ones about the knackered Fox. I think he was a bit down on the Marina compared to the Allegro because the Allegro is stranger and less typical. The very conventional 1960s Detroit-influenced styling of the Marina isn't really his thing, he tends to like more unusual looking European and Japanese cars, like his beloved tin snail Elly.

Yeah, I can understand. While most peoples preference is two door versions of anything, mine has always been base models, four door and estates, like the Dodge Coronet four door and the Plymouth Suburban (station wagon version of Christine!) I used to own a mk4 Ford Zephyr but I always preferred the look of the estate.

I like all three Marina bodystyles more or less equally, but I'm totally on board with poverty spec. Less trim to need replacing if it goes walkabout or breaks

I had to drive a 150 mile round trip this afternoon/tonight and decided to use this one instead of my daily van. It didn't miss a beat and did me proud. Roll on the Nationals in Wales!

Drove my car for the first time since New Years Day and a recent brake conversion/upgrade.

I’ve hardly anytime to prep the car before the nationals so quick oil and filter change will have to do. The brakes are all new and double checked so what can go wrong....... ImageImageImage

I know he's not a bad lad....I've know OF him for years from the magazines, and really enjoyed the early videos I discovered that he'd made, which when they were other people's cars or recent modern cars he was testing, they seemed fairly objective, but then he seemed to start doing longer videos of basically messing about in his own garage with his own very down at heel cars, and yes, he's had success, but some of his methods made me wince, and I've got (slightly) better ways to spend my free time than watching hours of that, and I felt his car tests became more subjective and in some cases the criticism was over minor details that I felt didn't really matter. And like I said before, a case in point being saying 'only' four gears on Gareth's Marinas when ALL the family saloons of the early 70s 'only' had four gears, including the Allegro 1100. You shouldn't compare them to modern cars, only their peers. Yeah the Maxi had five speeds, and that was the unique exception, apart from the Allegro with the Maxi engine. I guess a bit like I'm saying HubNut has made his mind up about certain cars before he tried them, I guess I'm also guilty of developing a preconception of when I watch a video of his now, he will complain about the wiper pattern, drive another person's car quite quickly over some very bumpy roads, and if he's in his own garage, do some things I wouldn't do to a car I wouldn't bother with! So I decided I didn't need notifications about this any more and unsubscribed!

Took the estate up to Scotland for the weekend and enjoyed the Moffat show today and nice road run yesterday. Car ran perfect after its cylinder head rebuild. Only saw 1 other marina up there, a sandglow mk2 that I see there every year but I've never seen the owner. He probably says the same when he sees my estate or the coupe!

I painted all the dash trim on TDT the other day. I've given up trying to find the original colour for them, sometimes they look grey, sometimes they look blue, so I decided to paint them in my own choice, metallic British Racing green!
Not bad

The camera flash and the fresh trim now highlights how grubby the dashboard is, looks better in the day
