Hi Chris,
I will see what I can do and get some pics posted.

Got a slid hammer for the half shaft but as soon as I get a puller for the hub I will be on to it!

Hi Chris,
Been doing some work on the rear Axel and got some pics of the rear hub.

Not going to plan as I had thought :?

I wanted to remove the hub and then draw out the half shaft but it seems the hub is on there good!
One if not both wheel bearings are in need of replacement so I will continue.
Using a slid hammer with the hub nut half on the shaft and half on the slid hammer worked to remove half shaft no problems. (Probably could have done that with a block of wood and hammer but as I had the tool I used it)

I bought so Sealey 3 leg pullers to remove hub but found they are no good as the hub (Which is only a tapper with a key way) is very well stuck on the shaft. So I ended up with whole half shaft and hub and bearing removed after undoing the 4 bolts holding on the back plate on.

I also had a go at knocking the shaft out of the hud by bracing the hub and using a drift, this also failed. I am now looking for a better hub puller and saving the Sealey ones to pull the bearing off as they should be better at that I hope.

The green angle iron fitted over the wheel stud was only there the stop hub turning while I tightened the puller which was easy until the puller thread started to break up! :x

Any ideas are welcomed as my last problem was solved :)

Also wanted to ask what the 5th hole is for in the back plate? This also goes through the axel flange and will give access to the rear wheel bearing and I thought it would have a grease nipple on the reverse of the axel flange but it is just open and a fair amount of grease has come out!!! I would of expected this area to be sealed or have a nipple. The replacement metal seal cover I have which goes between the hub and the back plate are square and do not have the extra buldge on one side so would render this hole useless. Was this a design change? Should it be plugged after bearing fitted?

If anyone can shed some light on this I would be grateful.

Just got to get the hubs off and I will be re-assembling the back axel and then on to painting it :D

A bit of heat will help.. Get a good powerful blowlamp or even better an oxy acetelene torch on it and heat the hub up as much as possible. Heat it evenly, not locally and it'll be fine. Then put your puller back on while it's all still roasting hot, tighten up the puller as much as possible and then smack the puller bolt end on to jolt it free. TBH, the only other alternative is to take it to your local engineering shop and they can push the hub off with a hydraulic press...

RIMMER BROS do a hub puller that fits marina/ital/spitfire/dolomite etc.
bolts onto the wheel studs and a large nut that you turn to withdraw the hub of the half shaft.

dodgy deals with frank me thinks, billytits blasting services available if you want them done jim. i also agree with the heat for removing the hub use the puller as well if not take it somwhere with a hydraulic press any good workshop should have one

Hi Chris,
Just to up-date you on the rear hub removal.
had to farm this out to Recardo (The engine developers on Shoreham Airport) They have a 20 tonne press. 10 tonne not enough after 35 years of hubs being on a tapper

They are pressing on my new bearing too :D

Slid hammer great to remove half shafts but 3 leg pullers or the other sort no good if your hubs if they have never been off since the car was new!!

I will post some more pictures soon when I start re-assembly.
Rear Axel and springs are off shell at moment
Paul.
