Tony on the picture of the front wheel it looks like you have got locking wheel nuts , if you have would you mind me asking you where you got them from as you don't see them advertised that often much obliged IVOR .

I got them years ago Ivor.
Classic Mini clubman I seem to recall.
Trawling through eBay and found some period ones. To be honest I think they'd steal the engine first!

I’ve got some but have never fitted them!

Had a dodgy indicator, car's had a 'auto electrician' in it before - chocolate blocks and twisted together wires galore.

Fixed the indicator problem, flowed some solder into a crimp on type fitting that was the ground.

Noticed the R/H well in the boot was full of water, so let the drain plug go and watched yellow water piss out for awhile.

Proceeded to notice the number plate lamp wire was not connected, felt around and the glass bit of the bulb fell out of the rest, had to extract with a set of needle nose pliers.
Apparently 12v 5w single pole bulbs of its size are not something I have on the shelf.. Ended up going to a vintage computer auction and shuffled around in a box of stuff and found a old plastic bag with a rusty staple - had three bulbs of the same form factor but 14v - fitted and works fine.

Red Cross parcel arrived today from Invercargill - dipstick tube for my Series 1 (YDO24) 1750 TC, and four sections of B pillar containing the unobtainable rubber hinge blocks for the opening rear quarterlight windows (from a rusted beyond saving TC).

After eight weeks today I received a letter from the DVLA returning my completed V5C ('tax class' = HISTORIC, dated and signed) , it states:-

Thank you for telling us that you want to change the tax class of your vehicle to Historic.
Before we can change the tax class of your vehicle you will need to re licence your vehicle in the Historic tax class.
To do this, I have enclosed a V10 (application for vehicle tax) for you to fill in and return with original documents

A V10 form was not enclosed, as far as I am aware there is no mention of this requirement on the DVLA website and the Post Office employee was aware of my reason for handing in my V5C but made no mention of the need for a V10 to be completed.

I contacted the DVLA by webchat, which lasted for a staggering 1 hour and 9 minutes, they are insistent that the V10 must be completed.

Anyone else come across this requirement, I suspect the error was made in the Post Office?

Two envelopes received from DVLA yesterday
(1) new V5C with 'HISTORIC VEHICLE' specified in section 6 (New keeper slip)
(2) refund payment for vehicle tax, letter with attached cheque.

When I purchased this vehicle new on 12 OCT 1979 the vehicle was taxed for 12 months which ran from 01 OCT - 30 SEP and for all following years it has been taxed for 12 months. On 12 October last year it celebrated it's 40th birthday so in my mind this means that road tax should not have been required after the end of October 2019. But this is not how it works and I expected this because in my webchat with the DVLA, referred to above, I specifically asked what do I fill in on the V10 where it asks 'What month and year do you want the vehicle tax to start?' with a response of the date you send it back to us. So my refund cheque is for £26.66 (£160 / 12 = £13..33 per month). I feel I have been robbed and frustratingly if there had not been the messing about with the V10 previously referred to it would have been for twice that amount. The received letter states:-
'We calculated this refund from the date we received notification that your vehicle has;
become exempt from paying vehicle tax'

Out of interest has anyone been treated differently, that is was a refund received from the date of the vehicle's 40th birthday?

Tax exemption is from April 1st the year after the vehicle turns 40. Has been the case since the moving exemption was reintroduced in the 2014 budget- the youngest a car can be and still be exempt is 40 years and 3 months. In other words if your tax refund was backdated to April this year that will be correct.

Incidentally MOT exemption is separate and does apply from the 40th birthday if the vehicle is eligible, although you won't be prompted to make a declaration until the vehicle is next taxed.

Thanks for the response. I was aware of the 1st April date. My vehicle tax refund has not been backdated to April, it is from 1st August. To recap I submitted my V5C at a Post Office in April but it appears the PO employee made an error and after two months I received a letter from the DVLA requesting that I submit a V10 to 're licence my vehicle in the Historic tax class'. A further delay in receiving the V10 from DVLA meant that it was not submitted till early July and as previously stated the letter to which the refund cheque is attached states:-

'We calculated this refund from the date we received notification that your vehicle has;
become exempt from paying vehicle tax'

additionally the V10 asks 'What month and year do you want the vehicle tax to start? and then states You cannot backdate the tax to before the first day of the month in which you are making this application

Yes, sorry, I read your comment "so in my mind this means that road tax should not have been required after the end of October 2019" and thought you were expecting a refund back until then which is most definitely not the case.

If I've read this correctly the car has been taxed since April 1st (and earlier) at the normal rate, they have finally processed the change to "historic" this month but you've only been refunded 2 months tax (effectively June and July). You should really have been refunded 4 months, April/ May/ June/ July by my reckoning. I'm not sure it's worth the pain of arguing with the DVLA for the sake of £26 though... And to be fair to them, the circumstances of late have been rather exceptional.
