Thanks for posting that David, a fascinating and well written article. Great to see the Portugese advertisements as well, particularly the mk1 which looks more like an illustration than a photograph.
I can just imagine Marina diesel taxis lined up outside the railway stations.

I enjoyed the article, but it’s not entirely true that the Marina the Marina was never offered with a diesel in the UK. The Pickup was offered with the diesel and at least one batch was made for the RAF as airfield cars, one of which still exists.

The Girls driving that were Rothmans promotional girls they were both killed when they ran into the back of a caravan on The Bala road they had been into Kenning Shrewsbury about a hour before the remains of the car sat in the bodyshop for several weeks after then when it went to Furbers in Press and sat in the shed there until the site was cleared a couple of years ago

I didn't know that... the 'receiver' who bought the site didn't know the history.
Scary story.
. Thanks

It was a W J Furber at Prees Heath That was where he used to store the Repairable Salvage. He was known locally as Billy Furber He also had a Dismantlers/ Breaker (The old fashioned help yourself climb on top of a pile of three at Roving Bridge Whixall. His Son took over the Business a few years ago and when bust in a short period of time. The Site is now a Nature Reserve on Whxhall Moss. The other Furber scrapyard locally was a Childs Earcall Nlot far from Newport I understand it was the same family but apart from that no connection. I always found them easier to deal with most cars were at ground level it was smaller but better organised all models put together They did however finish at a similar time may be a bit sooner probably getting on 15-20 years ago spring to mind

DAVID the yard at WHIXALL was the one you drove over canal bridge to get in ,he seemed to acquire body shells that had been damaged on the assembly lines . I can remember going with a mate who runs his own car body repair business to buy a marina pickup body shell that had been damaged on the assembly line ,he used a marina van for a donar car for the running gear and built himself a rust free pickup.

I spent most of the last half of 2015 at Prees Heath doing deals with the new owner who was a property man but had a reasonable insight into the scrap trade.
He got the yards at a good price from the official receiver and found some automotive Gems there... just like I did! Also... cars found behind bricked up walls....! One being a Lotus Carlton..
Sadly I got there too late for the real profitable stuff but managed to get some good BL stock which was too old for the new staff to understand what it was. Much marina stuff !
