Wobly gearstick

The more bits I take apart on my Marina based Marlin the more issues I find..
The gearbox itself is actually new - or it was 30 years ago just before it was taken off the road. Still covered in green paint! But I guess nothing was done to the gear change mechanism when the gearbox was changed so there is rather a lot of slack in it. I noticed, from the Haynes manual, there seem to be a couple of things that can be renewed (cup for the gearstick ball for example) but is it still possible to get such ietms? Maybe something can be used from another marque? I know the internals of the gearbox are the same as some triumphs, but the gear change seems to be completely different?
Any suggestions gratefully received
Cheers, Robin
