Brake servo - replace or repair?

Post by martinclan » Mon Feb 15, 2021 10:17 am

In the drive to bring my Marina based Marlin a little more up to date I have acquired a pedal box with servo and dual master cyclinder (Thanks to Barry).

The master cylinder will probably be serviceable after an overhaul - once I can find th correct service kit.
But the servo itself looks very tired. It had quite a lot of fluid in it, I guess either brake fluid of condensing fumes from the engine vacuum feed.
It seems that full repair kits for the servo used to be, but are no longer, available. So i wondered if something more recent might fit. TR7 servo perhaps?
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Cheers, Robin

The Marina servo (other than early 1.8TC) was a Lockheed T28. This was fitted to many other cars in period so it should be possible to source the parts from other suppliers. Cars included Mk1 Ford Escorts.

If you want someone to recondition it it try Past Parts in Bury St Edmonds - 01284 750729.

Hi Chris
Is the Lockheed the same as a Girling Supervac? I am pretty sure that's what I have. It looks pretty similar, from Googling, to the servo used in many other cars of that era. TR6 for one.
And, while I have your attention :-) is it correct you are a good person to ask about overhaul kits for the master cylinder?
Cheers, Robin

Robin I have found what I think is a repair kit for the dual circuit master cylinder. I thought I had one but for the life of me I could not find it when I was looking for it. Then I stumbled upon it at the weekend. The box has the unipart number grk1010. I will get some pictures up of it.

Hi Robin,

Girling and Lockheed were great competitors in the hydraulics market, so I doubt that they will be exactly the same, although obviously as they are doing the same job. Whichever servo yours is, personally I would speak to Past Parts as they can work with either type. You should also beware that there are two ways of securing the two halves of a servo. One is a locking mechanism, whereby the joining fingers interlock when turned by about 10 degrees. The other type has a crimped joining section which cannot be undone. These versions are serviced by being sawn in half and then rewelded afterwards.

I do have some master cylinder kits, but there are 4 different types of master cylinder used with servos in Marinas/Itals, so if you can either post a picture of the one you have here or email me at c.weedon@ntlworld.com and I can identify it and hopefully have what you need. If not I should be able to give the kit part numbers for you to continue your search.

Thanks guys.

Chris - you were right about the brake servo - it is crimped together. I have never seen one like that before. Definitely not a DIY repair. I'll speak to Past Parts but I suspect cutting it in half and then welding it back together might be out of my budget!

The master cylinder is Girling. Here is a picture. Strangely the two ports (on the other side) are different sizes. Never seen that either!
Most of the fluid had leaked out of it into the servo hence the mess in the servo itself.

I haven't taken it to bits yet to see what the bores look like. Am I in with a chance do you think - or will it have to be sleeved?

Cheers, Robin

Robin I will pop that seal kit in the post for you tomorrow. You can see if it will be of use to you. There are more seals in the kit that the master cylinder would need so the others may be for the servo. I would have included it with the pedal assembly if I had of found it in time. I had started to think that I had imagined buying it.

That’s a great offer from ‘wfb’ if his seal kit isn’t the right one, then I know Past Parts will have them and I think Lee Busbridge on here has a few seal kits.

If you are in a rush, I have a reconditioned master cylinder ready to go, stainless steel lined. They cost me lot to get done, but it’s on the shelf ready on exchange for your old one.

Thank-you  I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks Chris. Out of interest what is the cost of a stainless steel lined master cylinder?
