This was always a thorny subject, but I had it on good authority from an ex-Rover employee that all 'O' series engines are capable of running on unleaded without additives, which was why one was bolted into an MGB o test its suitability. I ran my Ital estate on straight 95 octane unleaded for over a year without any problems, apart from adjusting the timing a tad.

If that is the case why are later 'O' sereies fitted with harder valve seets?
That is from a ex-rover dealership and a engien reconditioners.
That proves one thing....even 'experts' can't agree!
