Rear Axle / Half-shaft specifications

Post by a_lincoln_socal » Tue Mar 22, 2022 6:39 pm

Hi, greetings from sunny San Diego.

I have 2 MGBs and we don't see too many Austin/ Morris Marinas in the States, so could use some help.

My friend has a British Car shop (MG, Jag, Austin/Morris, Triumph, Land Rover, etc.). He's currently fixing a Morris Minor Traveller with non-standard rear axle (broken half shaft, needs bearings & seals also). The axle looks like a 'banjo' axle used on MGA, early MGB, etc. but smaller.

The axle has 8" drum brakes, 3 3/4" wheel PCD. The half-shaft is 27 1/4" long and has 20 splines. I am guessing this is a Morris/ Austin Marina rear axle from the PCD and brake size, but I see the same (similar) axle was used in a lot of Triumphs. Any thoughts from readers on what this is?

My friend would also appreciate any information where he could get half-shafts and service kits: bearings, seals, gaskets, brake parts, etc.

That does sound like a Marina axle, grafting in front and rear Marina running gear into a Minor has been quite common in the UK. There is a US supplier of Marina parts - Skip Harris in Benton, Arizona.
