B Series water pump
Can anyone suggest where I can get a decent quality water pump from? I bought one from one of the big MGB parts dealers and it is pretty awful . The body is cast iron, as is what passes for the impeller. My original ( seized through 30+ years on standing) has an alluminium body and stainless impeller. It weighs about half the cast iron one!

eBay item number:284859970910 claimed by seller to be MGB & GT NEW GENUINE BMC CAST TYPE WATER PUMP 12H4468 looks rusty but will give you idea of what origonal part looked like. From memory most factory pumps were cast iorn with cast impellor i do know QH pumps were aluminium with tin impellor not sure about Unipart replacement though.

The cast iron units are original BMC or BL, the aluminium ones are after market by Quinton Hazell and others.

Very interesting PDF shows how things should be made properly and very good that a parts supplier has taken the time to get the reproduction parts produced correctly to a good standard incorporating the modern technology that makes components more reliable. Quality and reliability are so much lacking on many reproduction parts

Thanks David, I love this sort of thing. I have checked the BL parts manual and the Mk1 OE water pumps were GWP117 which was superseded by GWP123. The Mk2 OE water pump is GWP130 as shown on the Moss .pdf.

Re: B Series water pump
Excellent information thank-you. I think I will be buying from Moss. The waterpump I have from one of the other MGB suppliers is exactly as Moss describes with a casting that looks like it's a copy of a copy of a copy.... I suppose it may well be OK but I'd rather not find out the hard way.

Re: B Series water pump
I think that the updates to modern bearings and seals in the Moss unit is the most useful edition.
Interestingly on their website they list their Classic Gold version as well as a generic aftermarket and and Aluminium version - which I think was the original query of this topic.

Re: B Series water pump
The Moss Classic Gold pumps don't seem to be available any more and the GWP117 refers to the longer nosed variant to cater for the US anti smog equipment.

Re: B Series water pump
Yup - but all Marina B Series 18V engines can use GWP130.

That's right Chris. Oh by the way for future reference, the Moss PDF that I posted above is also in my post in the Technical section on B - series water pumps from last year when I was also looking for a new one. I should imagine that this post wil slip slowly off the page and be forgotten but posts on Technical section seem to stick around a bit longer.

So - out of interest - which water pump did you fit?

Well Robin unfortunately I didn't have time to shop around as my Marina is my only car and I needed to have it back on the road quickly as I had to take my daughter down to Uni in Southampton (400 plus mile round trip) so I fitted a GWP130 from a place called British Car Parts who are based in Stevenage who provided 3 day postage.martinclan wrote: ↑Tue Jun 28, 2022 10:37 am So - out of interest - which water pump did you fit?

However for you, a quick eBay search has revealed that Moss do have both Classic Gold and the alloy version listed:

Thank-you. Interesting that Moss are selling the gold version on Ebay as according to there web site it was out of stock. I'll order from Ebay and see what happens...

Yes, I thought it rather odd too. At least they seem reasonably priced.
