Ay Up Trev,
So not really a problem then,i'm sure any downside aspects are more than compensated for on the fuel saving aspects,i wonder what a correctly fitted 5 speed gearbox would make to the the arrangement?
So off the top of your head how much extra per tank/gallon of the old go-go juice are you getting now you have under taken the wheel and diff swap?

To pick up on Russ's question on the 5 speed box. The fifth gear ratio in the Sierra box is 0.82 or to put another way 18% overdriven.
Clearly unless you were to drive around in fifth all the time you won't make an 18% saving, I'm hoping for 7-10%.
By the way, the previous gearbox that was fitted included the J type overdrive which was 25% overdriven so potentially even greater economy.

hi russ
without going into all the maths which i'm poo at, around about 35 to 40 miles a tank if driven at the speed limits. most of my trip to work is motorway or fast A roads the one thing i do know is i dont have to visit my garage to fill up as often, and when the 1700 lump go's in it would be rude not to put a type 9 in there so i will be needing one of the lovely kits all i need to do is get my hands on the right box, or could i fit the extended v6 shaft into a standard box?

Hi Trev,
Yes we spoke to a gearbox specialist who says that a V6 input shaft will go into a standard 4 cylinder gearbox, something about using the input shaft from a 2.3 V6 Cortina? Assuming that you would have whatever gearbox rebuilt anyway before fitting, that would be the best time to do it, best to speak to whoever rebuilds your gearbox at the time.
There is an XR4i gearbox on Ebay at the moment for little money with a day to go, this has all the right parts already. It's in Crawley which I think is fairly close to you.

cheers for that chris not quite ready to think about the five speed yet it dosnt realy matter if it needs a rebuild, as that sort of thing is my job, i rebuild big paper machine components from pumps and gearboxes. i will wait for the right one as i know someone who is breaking a siera soon so i can have that box for nothing then fit the exended shaft which im sure i will be able to find. im affraid it boils down to lots to do and no time to do it
