Chris: You give me far more credit than I am capable of! Thanks, but I'm past doing a business that size. This little enterprise, rpMGroup, is the best I can do. Nice thought, though. Skip

I know I always moan about this, but how do people get away with black & silver plates on a pre 1972 car? They are illegal don't you know!

Not on a pre '73 car they're not!JBS 101S wrote:I know I always moan about this, but how do people get away with black & silver plates on a pre 1972 car? They are illegal don't you know!
The classic car movement needs Jeremy Clarkson like Jenson Button needs a towhitch and a Sprite Musketeer....

Think some '73 cars can have them too-Dave Bristow will confirm as he has looked into it-can't remember the details!

Re: Gary's Mumford in Classics Monthly
This is from the MOT tester's manual:
'Vehicles manufactured before 1 January 1973 may have registration plates displaying white, grey or silver characters on a black background.'
So technically it could fail an MOT on displaying an illegal number plate. It doesn't annoy me so much with Marinas but with 80s Minis I think they just silly. Personally I like to see correct period plates like peaked digit ones (at least Gary's Mumford has peaked digit plates ) rather than black and silver plates that few Marinas had originally (after all who buying a new car in the 1970s wanted the 'old' style on their shiny new Marina?!).
) rather than black and silver plates that few Marinas had originally (after all who buying a new car in the 1970s wanted the 'old' style on their shiny new Marina?!).
Your choice at the end of the day, you could be hit with a maximum of a £1000 fine.
Obviously if your car was actually manufactured before 1st Jan 73 but not registered until later (and possibly even wearing a later date letter) you can get away with it.

Ah-that's it. Manufactured before '73 but possibly not registered till later

In several years of running silver and black plates I've had no bother-let's face it-who cares? Sure the police/mot testers have better things to worry about!
Bit like my bike-illegally small number plate ( not silly small though ) race exhaust and I always wear a black visor-15 years and never one problem.
I also bet most police/mot testers don't know when the date cut off is. I know Paul's mot'er didn't apply the correct emmisions test for his jubilee and I've had to advise one tester what the criteria was for an older car! So number plates are even less critical and probably little notice is taken of them.

Gary's Mumford in Classics Monthly
The number plate offence isn't a road traffic act offence at all, nor a construction and use offence, it's a registration and licensing offence. Not endorsable and limited in maximum fine value. The original change was brought in because white and black at the front and yellow and black at the rear were more easily visible in situations like hit and run accidents. When the changes first came in people wanted the modern reflective plates and loads of cars with old plates changed them for modern reflective ones, now it's the other way round, everyone wants the old plates.

Re: Gary's Mumford in Classics Monthly
I think that is certainly true. I don't know of anyone who has been prosecuted for having illegal black and silver/white plates yet I know of plenty of classics with them and they are regularly seen at shows etc, sometimes with policemen talking to the owners. I think at the end of the day police are often more lenient with classic vehicles that are obviously cared for, it's only if you get said bloke on an off-day or some petty jobsworth type that it becomes a risk. I do know of someone who was prosecuted for having German style plates on a 1980s BMW, but that is far more obvious to a policeman than black and silver plates.balmy wrote: I also bet most police/mot testers don't know when the date cut off is.
It's just whether you want to run the risk of doing so, I never will but that isn't out of a desire to stick to the law, it's just that I love peaked digit number plates 8)

Re: Gary's Mumford in Classics Monthly
Ok I am worried now as I did not write the above!!!!!!!!!!! :?But the rest may catch up eventually David so beware.
I'm worried-sounds like your threatening me!
Either my memory as gone mental or someone edited it or hacked it??
Not my memory as it was only 3 hours ago and I have had no drugs or drinks - honest!
Any ideas people?
I had a section explaining if it was me I would have picked the wrong time, place and person and ended up with a fine if I had a illegal plate! This has disappeared from the above and some happy faces added etc  :?

Re: Gary's Mumford in Classics Monthly
looking into the log it looks like its just been a hickup/tech mistake - don't think you've been hacked, but as they say you should change your passw. on a regular basis (personally i've never done that tho - to many passwords for my small memory :P )

I quoted that bit from your post but it didn't appear and I couldn't be bothered to write it again. It must have appeared much later as I checked again before I went to bed!
